A first half double from the lanky Nigeria forward ensured the Flying Eagles began their 2015 African Youth Championship campaign on a bright note
Nigeria U20 team defeated hosts Senegal U20 3-1 in the opening match of the 2015 African Youth Championship played at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar on Sunday.
A brace from Taiwo Awoniyi in the opening 11 minutes of the encounter inspired Manu Garba’s side to victory with Ifeanyi Mathew getting the third for the Nigerians with Sidy Sarr pulling a goal for the hosts.
Awoniyi opened scoring for the Flying Eagles in the eight minute after beating onrushing goalkeeper Seydou Sy to tap into an empty net.
In similar fashion two minutes later, he got a long pass from Mathew to beat Sy who rushed out of his area for the second goal.
Sarr reduced the deficit in the 26th minutes after profiting from a moment of carelessness from the Nigeria U20 defence.
Few minutes later, Sarr failed to level up for his side as he failed to link up a cross with only Nigeria goalie Joshua Enaholo to beat as Ibrahim Wadji headed wide in a similar position.
The Nigerians restored their two-goal lead few minutes into the second half through Matthew with a shot that beat the Senegalese goalkeeper.
On resumption of the second half, both sides were cautious and ensured they did not concede any goal as they game ended in favour of the rampant Nigerian team.
With this win, Manu Garba’s team sit atop Group A with three points plus two goals difference and will face Congo On Wednesday at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor
